Trump Points to Discarded Ballots as Proof of Potential for Election Fraud

In a highly unusual public statement, U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Pennsylvania, David Freed, said his office and the Federal Bureau of Investigation were contacted on Monday by Luzerne County District Attorney Stefanie Salavantis amid concerns about 'potential issues with a small number of mail-in ballots at the Luzerne County Board of Elections'.

The county in Pennsylvania where authorities stated they were investigating the ballots supported Trump in the 2016 election.

Trump has repeatedly in the past claimed that the election would be rigged or made unsubstantiated claims of widespread voter fraud.

They report that the Luzerne County election officials have been cooperative, and that the names of those who cast the ballots is not fully known.

On Thursday afternoon, the DOJ issued a press release attributed to David Freed, U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Pennsylvania, claiming that "FBI personnel working together with the Pennsylvania State Police" recovered nine military ballots and said all of the "discarded" ballots were cast for Trump.

"Not because nine ballots got thrown out, nearly certainly by accident, but because it suggests DOJ is now an active participant in Trump's effort to undermine the integrity of the presidential election". Trump routinely expresses doubt about the reliability of mail-in voting amid the COVID-19 pandemic and the investigation quickly became national news, New York Post reported. "I don't know that it can be with this whole situation - unsolicited ballots, they are unsolicited, millions being sent to everybody".

The U.S. Senate, on Thursday, took the symbolic action of approving by unanimous consent a resolution reaffirming the chamber's "commitment to the orderly and peaceful transfer of power called for in the U.S. Constitution, and for other purposes". "And people have to have confidence in the results of the election and the legitimacy of the government, and people trying to change the rules to this, to this methodology which, as a matter of logic is very open to fraud and coercion, is reckless and risky and people are playing with fire", Barr said on CNN's "The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer" on September 2.

The Nov. 3 election is less than six weeks away.

Election officials were unaware of the contents of the ballots at this point and had no idea that several were votes for President Trump, according to the statement. "Democrats are clamoring for it", the president once tweeted.

Now, he said Friday, "the attorney general of the United States and the Department of Justice are colluding with the president and his campaign to sabotage the legitimacy of the election". The president has been criticizing the integrity of this year's election for months.
