The University of Glasgow has 172 confirmed cases, with 600 students self-isolating, said the Sky News.

More than 30 universities around Britain have reported coronavirus cases since the new school term started earlier this month, with thousands of students in self-isolation, local media reported on Monday. Education secretary Gavin Williamson is expected to make a statement in the Commons on 29 September.

It clarified that students had been asked to self-isolate wherever they were.

The University and College Union has described the Manchester incident as "the latest catastrophe in a week where wholly predictable - and predicted - Covid outbreaks have caused havoc on campuses across the UK".

"Universities have done all they can to prepare for students' safe return, but the government has again let young people down".

"I'm hearing from some students across the country where there are security guards outside of these blocks where students are being kept, stopping people from leaving, coming and going, where students are being discouraged from getting deliveries and told by the university that they'll deliver food and that delivery has not arrived and so they've gone for the day without food", she said.

The university offered students in residences, whether they were isolating or not, a four-week rent rebate in recognition of the hard circumstances, plus money towards food, and clothes washing services for students who can not leave their room.

Students across the United Kingdom have been left "trapped" in university halls of residence as the government's lockdown messaging leaves thousands in self-isolation.
