The move came following a report from The New York Times that Trump paid just $750 in income taxes in 2016, the year he ran for president, and in 2017, his first year in the White House. Biden's running mate, also released her information and it shows that she earned more than $3 million in taxable income and paid almost $755,000 in taxes. The Bidens reported taxable income of $944,737.

Biden's deputy campaign manager, Kate Bedingfield, said on a call with reporters ahead of the first presidential debate on Tuesday that returns for Biden, Harris and their spouses would be released online on Tuesday afternoon.

Trump has denied the Times report, dismissing it as "fake news" at a press conference, but he has provided no evidence to refute it.

Kamala Harris also released her 2019 tax returns on Tuesday, which showed that she and her husband, Doug Emhoff, paid about $1.2 million in taxes and had an adjusted gross income of about $3 million.

The Biden campaign responded by saying he won't be wearing an earpiece and didn't ask for any breaks, adding, "If we're playing that game then the Trump team asked that Chris Wallace never mention the number of COVID deaths once during the debate".

The president has broken with decades of precedent for major-party presidential nominees in declining to release any of his tax returns.

While Trump is itching to go on the offence against Biden, some aides have encouraged him to adopt a more measured tone - believing that in many ways the debates are more about Trump vs himself than Biden. Some involved with the preparations, though, have encouraged Trump's more aggressive "counterpunching" side.
