With 88650 new cases, India's corona tally nears 60 lakh

In the past seven days, almost one in every three new infections reported in the world and one in every five reported coronavirus deaths came from India, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.

Maharashtra continues to lead the COVID-19 tally for new cases, highest number of deaths and recoveries in the past 24 hours, according to the Health Ministry on Sunday. There are 9,40,441 active cases of coronavirus infection in the country which comprises 15.11 per cent of the total caseload.

According to the Johns Hopkins University Globally, COVID-19 has infected more than 32.9 million people and killed nearly 1 million people. Meanwhile, Maharashtra minister for public health and family welfare Rajesh Tope has criticised private hospitals and diagnostic centres saying they have taken undue advantage of the COVID-19 situation by charging exorbitantly high for basic health services.

India's COVID-19 tally had crossed the 20-lakh mark on August 7, 30 lakh on August 23, 40 lakh on September 5 and it went past 50 lakh on September 16.

The Google Maps for Android app seems to be testing a new vehicle mode UI reminiscent of the Google Maps for Android Auto app. There's no word on when (or if) Google will roll it out widely.

Karnataka on Saturday reported 8,811 new COVID-19 cases and 86 related fatalities, taking the total number of infections to 5,66,023 and the death toll to 8,503, the Health department said.

The 776 new fatalities include 180 from Maharashtra, 70 from Tamil Nadu, 59 from Karnataka, 58 from Uttar Pradesh, 56 from West Bengal, 46 from Punjab, 37 each from Andhra Pradesh and Delhi and 35 from Madhya Pradesh. Interestingly, Kerala which was earlier lauded for its effective Covid management strategies, is now seeing a surge in cases. Over 1,000 deaths were also recorded in the last 24 hours.

So far, just under 6 million cases (5,992,532) have been registered in the country according to its official figures.
