Hurricane Delta now Category 2, roars at Mexico's Yucatan

The storm - the fourth named storm of the Greek alphabet in what has been an extraordinarily busy hurricane season in the Atlantic Ocean - was situated southwest of Jamaica late Monday morning, with 45 miles per hour sustained winds and moving at 7 miles per hour.

A risky storm surge will raise water levels by as much as four to seven feet above normal tide levels along coast of the Yucatan peninsula within the hurricane warning area, near and to right of where the center makes landfall.

As of 10:20 am Tuesday, Delta was 125 miles southwest of Grand Cayman and moving west-northwest near 16 mph.

Delta will enter the Gulf on Wednesday and it is forecast to be a major hurricane when it approaches Louisiana on Friday.

The US National Hurricane Centre (NHC) has upgraded Tropical Depression 26 to Tropical Storm Delta. A U.S. landfall would break a record that dates back to 1916 for the most named storms to hit the United States, another milestone in a year marked by repeated natural disasters ranging from floods to wildfires to tornados.

Governor John Bel Edwards of Louisiana urged people there to start getting ready for its arrival.

Delta is forecast to stay at a Category 4 hurricane when it slams into Cancun Tuesday night into early Wednesday morning. There was also a tropical storm warning for the Cayman Islands including Little Cayman and Cayman Brac.

On the official National Hurricane Center forecast track, the center of Delta will move over the northeastern portion of the Yucatan peninsula late tonight or early Wednesday. Output from the Gulf has been disrupted several times this year from tropical storms and hurricanes moving through the region.

Where is Hurricane Delta now? This rainfall may result in areas of flash flooding and mudslides. The storm became hurricane strength Monday night local time, and it could reach tree-snapping Category 3 power on the five-step Saffir-Simpson scale as it hits Mexico, said Ryan Truchelut, president of Weather Tiger LLC.

Gov. Kay Ivey on Tuesday issued a supplemental State of Emergency ordering mandatory evacuations along the Gulf Coast ahead of Hurricane Delta.

In one day, October 19, 2005, Hurricane Wilma strengthened from a Category 2 to the most intense Category 5 hurricane on record, according to the NHC.

Delta is now a category 4 hurricane.
