Wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik on Friday handed over the captaincy of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to England's World Cup winning skipper Eoin Morgan for the remaining matches of the Indian Premier League (IPL), the franchise informed ahead of their match against Mumbai Indians. Karthik captained KKR in two seasons and led the team to the knockouts in 2018 and a fifth-place finish in 2019. He said that he was surprised by the decision of Karthik, but also mentioned the fact that he respects his decision to put the team first.

Morgan, who was the vice-captain of the KKR side, said that he will look to continue working with the players within the group. The KKR captain was criticized by many for some of his decisions. He had also played a Man of the Match innings in the next match against Kings XI Punjab (58 off 29) to take his team to their second consecutive victory.

Also not playing a quality spinner like Kuldeep Yadav on a slow Sharjah track did raise a few question marks. They have four wins and three losses, including an 82-run drubbing against Royal Challengers Bangalore earlier this week.

This year, the West Indian was promoted up the order but hasn't been able to replicate his form from last season.

Kolkata had made Dinesh Karthik the captain before the start of the 2018 IPL season and at that time he replaced Gautam Gambhir, who won the team twice. On the other hand, Morgan leads the English side in limited overs cricket, was widely tipped to take over at some point from Karthik given the topsy-turvy run.
