Bruno Fernandes heaped praise on "big player" Harry Maguire after the under-fire defender responded to criticism by scoring in Manchester United's 4-1 Premier League victory at Newcastle United.

Bruno Fernandez scored the second goal in the 86th minute.

United, who were heading towards a 1-1 draw at St James' Park, scored thrice in the dying stages to clinch an impressive 4-1 win.

United have been a defensive mess since the start of the season, losing 6-1 at home to Tottenham in their last game albeit with 10 men, and all eyes will be on Harry Maguire after another chastening outing for England.

This was a sound response from United, who were thrashed 6-1 by Tottenham before the worldwide break.

Having bagged himself a pair of assists in the build-up to the second and third, Rashford made it four in the sixth minute of stoppage time, the 22-year-old once again scampering away down the left before calmly slotting past Darlow. Marcus Rashford broke away down the left, before the England worldwide laid the ball into the path of Fernandes who slotted home a sensational finish into the top corner from a narrow-angle. "There is a long way to go, we have to improve", he told Sky Sports. "We wanted to get to this global break with more points than we have, but now we know our season started today, because we've come up to the speed of the game".

We discussed this with him in the locker room, asked him. We work hard in training, it is a great group and we knew we had to bounce back.

Hooda and Jordan though made sure that KXIP stayed in the hunt before the latter got out on the final ball, with scores levelled. With 5 needed from 4, Mayank went aerial over the off-side to hit a four and then closed out the game.

This, in turn, begs the question, why is van de Beek yet to start a Premier League game for United? "Some games we will not be at our best but we have to do the basics well and in the games we lost we didn't do the basics well", Maguire said.

"We don't want to use it as an excuse, but we needed preseason".

And the Norwegian boss was delighted with the character his team showed. We play for such a big club and such a big team.

"Every time you lose a game you just want to get back out on the pitch and we've had two weeks since the last game so it was hard".

"The season started for us today", he added. He's been away with Wales and missed a few games for us with a bad cold.
