Liverpool confirms surgery for Van Dijk

The Reds say no specific timescale is being placed upon his return to action at this stage.

Jordan Pickford could yet be retrospectively banned after his shocking tackle on Virgil van Dijk, according to the Mirror's John Cross.

The club has yet to set a date for Van Dijk's surgery due to the necessity for the swelling around the knee joint to subside sufficiently for the player to be operated on.

The club did not say when the operation will take place or how long the 29-year-old Dutch global will be out of action.

Liverpool did not give a timescale on Van Dijk's absence, but an injury of that nature will likely keep the Netherlands worldwide out for a long period.

The only thing in Liverpool's favour would be that no team is defending that well so far and Liverpool's attacking options are among the best in the league.

"I know the transfer window has just finished by they have to be ready on January 1 to bring someone in".

Without the Brazilian in goal, Klopp's men have conceded nine times in their last two matches, including a historic 7-2 humiliation at Aston Villa two weeks ago.

Their campaign begins away to Ajax on Wednesday and recent arrival Thiago Alcantara is also a major injury doubt for the trip to Amsterdam.

It was established that the VAR, David Coote, reviewed the incident to check for a possible penalty or whether Van Dijk was offside, which he was judged to marginally be, but there was no check for a red card.

Thiago was able to complete the game, but has also been sent for scans to discover the extent of a knee injury. "We will have to see", Klopp said.
