Previous dolls include a blue and pink sequined dinosaur called "Tremor" on the SpaceX Crew Dragon mission in May and a stuffed Earth toy in an uncrewed test of the Crew Dragon in March 2019.

"Congratulations, this is a new era of operational flights to the International Space Station from the Florida coast", Hopkins, the commander of the mission, said shortly after docking.

NASA astronauts Michael Hopkins, Victor Glover, Shannon Walker, and Soichi Noguchi, an astronaut with Japan's space agency - will be greeted by a "welcome ceremony" once they exit their spacecraft for the first time since mid-afternoon Sunday (US time).

The Crew Dragon capsule and those on it are scheduled to reach the International Space Station within 27 hours of the launch.

"The hatches are open and NASA's @SpaceX Crew-1 astronauts Shannon Walker, @Astro_Soichi, @AstroVicGlover, and @Astro_illini are the newest residents aboard the @Space_Station", tweeted NASA early Tuesday.

The first flight, in May 2020, made history because it was the first time a private company had launched astronauts into Earth's orbit.

The seven are expected to remain on the ISS together until the first team ends its mission in April 2021.

The Baby Yoda toy, a character from the Disney Plus show "The Mandalorian", carries on a tradition in which spaceships carry plushies with them as "zero-gravity indicators".

That's why it was a surprise when Baby Yoda was spotted floating about the inside of the recently-launched SpaceX Dragon capsule, as reported by HuffPost. However, with Soyuz and Crew Dragon both ferrying astronauts to the station now, this will open up more opportunities for astronauts to make the journey. That rotation will continue until Boeing joins the programme with its own spacecraft late next year. Caty Weaver was the editor. "We are looking forward to getting this crew to station to continue our important work, and I want to thank the teams for the wonderful effort to make the next generation of human space transportation possible".
