Mitt Romney calls Trump's attempt to overturn MI election 'undemocratic'

But there is great concern that Trump's effort is doing real damage to public faith in the integrity of us elections.

Chris Krebs, the top U.S. election security official who was sacked by Trump after calling the election the most secure ever, wrote on Twitter that the news conference was "the most unsafe 1hr 45 minutes of television in American history" and "possibly the craziest".

"We depend on democratic norms, including that the losers graciously accept defeat", he said. "That seems to be breaking down".

In a news conference after a meeting with Republican and Democratic governors, Biden lambasted Trump's actions, saying that he was sending "incredibly damaging messages" to the rest of the world about how democracy functions by undermining the legitimacy of the 2020 presidential elections. Days after that statement was issued, Trump fired the agency's leader.

Some current and former Trump officials have privately reached out to Biden's transition team, but the Trump administration is still delaying the formal, orderly transition of power - a move some Republicans have raised concerns about while also supporting the president's losing legal fight. Legions of his supporters don't believe he lost. "And that's not a democracy".

U.S. media say the president may try to use Republican lawmakers in states he needs to flip - Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania for example - to target the electoral college system.

Still, some in his party considering the election settled didn't stop Trump on Thursday from coming out with a new round of false claims of voter fraud in key states.

At present, he trails President-Elect Joe Biden in the state by 157,000 votes.

But the president and his appointed administrator of the General Services Administration, Emily Murphy, continue to constitute a two-person blockade preventing the Biden team from commencing the transition.

Trump hasn't conceded and is mounting challenges in court over allegations of voter fraud and counting misconduct. Republicans on a canvassing board for the county that includes Detroit temporarily stopped certification of the vote after claiming that poll books in certain parts of the majority-Black city were out of balance. They later relented and the results were certified. "Over 78% of the American people believe it is without question, it is legitimate", he said. Biden won the state by roughly 155,000 votes (2.8%).

Trump appears intent on pushing the issue. Those two races are headed to a January runoff.

As Georgia Public Broadcasting's Stephen Fowler reported, four counties uncovered a few thousand previously uncounted votes, which subsequently cut into Biden's margin of victory. But both legislative leaders have indicated they will not try to overturn Biden's win.

"I hope we haven't created a system at WEC that entices people to request a ballot that actually isn't in keeping with the law", he said.

Mr Biden said he was confident Mr Trump knew he was not going to win and had shown "incredible irresponsibility".

The officials then backtracked and voted to certify before flipping again and saying they "remain opposed to certification". But they don't have proof.

He added: 'And that was before any evidence had been gathered'. It withdrew a federal lawsuit challenging the Detroit-area results, attaching affidavits from the pair.

Trump legal adviser Jenna Ellis, who joined Giuliani, said more evidence would be forthcoming and that Trump's allies would have more success in courts going forward. Many lawsuits have already been dismissed although a number of rulings are still to be made. "It is hard to imagine a worse, more undemocratic action by a sitting American president". "And possibly the craziest". A judge canceled an evidentiary hearing in the case. The deadlock brought claims of racism from Democrats before the board later voted unanimously to certify the results.

Among the Democrats on the videoconference was Gretchen Whitmer of MI, which is among the states Trump has targeted for unfounded claims of voter fraud. In northwestern Arizona, Mohave County officials postponed their certification until next week. The judge promised a full explanation in the future. Two Republican election officials in Michigan's largest county initially refused to certify results despite no evidence of fraud.

The counties were supposed to finish the hand count by 11:59 p.m. Wednesday.

"Almost ZERO ballots rejected in Georgia this election". In fact, Georgia requires that they be checked. "Obviously, the audit confirms the original result of the election, namely that Joe Biden won the presidential contest in the state of Georgia".

Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger said on Thursday that a hand audit of ballots in the state was complete and had confirmed Joe Biden as the victor of the November 3 election in the state.
