India's COVID-19 cases top 90 lakh; active cases at 4.43 lakh

The total number of confirmed coronavirus cases mounted to 89,58,483, with 45,576 infections being reported in a day while the toll climbed to 1,31,578 with 585 new fatalities, the data updated at 8 am showed.

The world's second-worst-hit country has now also registered more than 132 000 deaths from Covid-19, according to the latest official figures, which are widely seen as understating the true scale of infection.

The number of new daily Covid-19 cases in India has risen by nearly 50 per cent in two days, in the week following the major Hindu festival of Diwali, with a record number of fatalities in the capital of New Delhi. Delhi reported 6,396 cases in the last 24 hours while Kerala recorded 5,792 new cases.

Few people wear masks - particularly outside major cities - and in recent weeks shoppers have thronged markets in preparations for a series of religious festivals.

Authorities in capital New Delhi are fighting to head off almost 7,500 new cases a day while ensuring the flagging economy does not capsize again.

The western city of Ahmadabad has announced an indefinite night curfew after reporting an uptick in cases following the Diwali festival weekend.

The Delhi police have collected ₹26.72 crore in fines from people not wearing masks or following social distancing rules in public places from June 15 until November 19.

This week the number of cases in the metropolis passed half a million, with a record rise in daily cases and deaths.

"My father's oxygen saturation level dipped ... and we rushed to the nearby hospital but there were no beds available", Delhi resident Rajeev Nigam told AFP.

The Haryana Government said it ran out of testing kits but efforts were now being made to step up sampling.
