Guardiola's new deal, worth an estimated £20million-a-year, will eventually take his stay at City to seven years, putting him second on the list of the club's longest-serving post-war managers.

City have won 181 of the 245 matches in which Guardiola has taken charge, and set Premier League records en route to winning the 2017-18 Premier League title with 100 points.

But the former Barcelona player said Guardiola's presence made his job of signing players much easier, and that would never be truer should the prospect of a reunion with the Catalan tempt Messi to Manchester next summer. We have incredible targets we want to achieve and this is all we have in our minds.

"There are players that think they want to play more than the other ones, so this is the natural life of a squad, so what is very very good for the club and for my job is having Pep [here]".

"The challenge for us is to continue improving and evolving, and I am very excited and about helping Manchester City do that".

He said: "Lionel Messi is a Barcelona player".

The Mirror says City are determined to reunite Messi with Guardiola after tying their boss down to a new deal until 2023. The forward will have just six months left on his contract in the New Year and is free to negotiate a free transfer with foreign clubs.

City chairman Khaldoon Mubarak highlighted that Guardiola's extension is a sign the club are heading in the right direction.

"It is a product of the mutual trust and respect that exists between him and the entire club".

"Importantly, it is a validation of the football structure and philosophy that has been built over more than a decade and to which he has contributed so much."
"We are a bit in talks, not advanced".

"I would like to stay with the club, so it's easy".

"I want him to finish his career there. But when you want to stay, it's not so hard".

Guardiola signed a two-year contract extension with City on Thursday and was immediately linked with his ex-player, who came close to moving last summer.
