Negative virus test required for Hawaii travelers

"Hawaii has the most rigorous pre-testing travel program in the country and we're grateful to Air Canada and WestJet for making it available to their passengers", said Governor Ige.

WestJet and Air Canada have signed an agreement with the state of Hawaii which will allow guests travelling to the islands a way to bypass the mandatory 14-day quarantine in the USA state.

Under the new rules, passengers who arrive without a negative test result from what Ige called a trusted partner will not be allowed to skip quarantine even if a negative result occurs shortly after arrival. The test must be taken within 72 hours of travel to the State of Hawaii, and a negative test result must be received prior to departure. You must update your test results, otherwise you will face the 14-day quarantine.

Since the pandemic began, Hawaii has recorded almost 17,000 positive cases and 222 deaths from COVID-19. Hawaii normally experiences an increase in visitors during the time period many Americans have time off from work and school.

New Details Emerge in Alleged Plot to Kidnap Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer
Even though prominent Republicans in MI have opposed the bid, they too have been frustrated with the governor's shutdown. When the spread of the virus was contained in the summer, Whitmer said the percent positivity rate was around 3%.

"We applaud Governor Ige's announcement that Hawaii's science-based, pre-travel testing initiative is now available for Canadians to be exempt from mandatory quarantine requirements on arrival in Hawaii, and we are very pleased Air Canada is a preferred airline in Hawaii's Safe Travels Program", said Timothy Liu, managing director of sales planning at Air Canada.

"The Safe Travels Hawaii pre-travel testing program has been a valuable extra layer of safety for the state of Hawaii and is being emulated across the country by other states", Lt. Gov Josh Green said. Passengers will then be required to display their negative test result prior to boarding.

WestJet will begin the testing program in partnership with DynaLIFE in Alberta for guests holding a WestJet-ticketed itinerary to Hawaii within 72 hours.

Earlier this week, the airline announced its December schedule including twice-weekly, non-stop Dreamliner service between Calgary and Honolulu and Calgary and Maui. Alberta residents may be eligible to participate in the joint Government of Canada and Government of Alberta pilot project to test arriving residents as part of reducing quarantine. Programs like this that provide viable, effective and alternative options to blanket quarantine requirements, are an important step to safely reopen travel around the world. Those who failed to do so were required to quarantine for 14 days after their arrival.
