When Rickman began this private challenge, his profession had taken off with roles that included Valmont in "Les Liaisons Dangereuses" on the Royal Shakespeare Firm and on-screen as Hans Gruber in 1988's "Die Laborious".

The book will be edited by Alan Taylor, editor of the Scottish Review of Books.

The Perfume actor started writing diaries in the 1990s and hoped that they would be published one day. As well as this, Rickman's diaries also featured his extensive writings on theatre, as he was an avid attendee and often wrote reviews which he kept to himself, described by the publisher as "some rapturous and others scathing".

As reported by The Guardian, Rickman's journals covered everything from his thoughts on acting to insights on friendships and politics.

He continued documenting his career while appearing in the Harry Potter movies, Love, Actually, Sense and Sensibility, Galaxy Quest and more.

The book will be edited by Alan Taylor, who previously put together The Country Diaries, a treasury of pastoral journals by the likes of Beatrix Potter, Dorothy Wordsworth and John Fowles, for Canongate. "The diaries reveal not simply Alan Rickman the actor however the actual Alan - his sense of humour, his sharp remark, his craftsmanship and his devotion to the humanities".

Meanwhile, editor Alan Taylor said that Alan's diaries were "anecdotal, indiscreet, witty, gossipy and utterly candid".

Pearson was close to Rickman having been mentored by the star early in his career - but he did not know his pal had been keeping diaries until after his death, aged 69.

Back in 2018, a collection of personal letters belonging to Rickman were due to go up for auction revealing that, at times, the actor felt frustrated in the role and concerned about how it fit into the wider Harry Potter franchise.
