"People around the world tuned in to find out what was going on, and NY tough became a symbol of the determination to fight back".

Cuomo delivered 111 consecutive daily briefings about the virus starting on March 2, and the clips have collectively drawn a total of 59 million viewers.

The Founder's Award is presented to an individual or organization who "crosses cultural boundaries to touch our common humanity".

New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo can add another accomplishment to his resume, as he is the recipient of an International Emmy Award.

For months, when the coronavirus first began its surge through the United States, with NY serving as the global epicenter at a point, Cuomo held live, daily press briefings to keep citizens appraised of any and all developments. Cuomo will officially receive his award on November 23.

The briefings were carried live by New York's local TV stations, nationally on CNN, MSNBC, Fox News and other news outlets in the US and around the world.

The 59-year-old came into the frame holding a copy of his book while wearing a dark suit with a crisp white shirt and no tie. The publisher also said that it represented "the largest first-day sales total for any book ever published" by the company.

The news of his award received a wide array of reactions on social media, with some applauding the decision and agreeing that the briefings were what the Academy said they were.

"While we continue to see COVID-19 cases surge around the globe, our data-driven micro-cluster strategy - centered on a robust testing program - has helped NY maintain one of the nation's lowest infection rates", Cuomo was quoted as saying in an official release issued on Saturday.

Cuomo's father Mario Cuomo served as governor from 1983 to 1994. In 2006, he was elected New York State Attorney General.

The Emmy awards are similar to the Academy Awards' Oscars.
