Former UFC champion McGregor signs deal to fight Poirier

McGregor said in October he wanted the fight to be held in Texas.

Well, on Thursday that fight became official as McGregor signed a contract with the UFC to meet Poirier in the octagon on January 23, 2021 at UFC 257. The 32-year-old Irish veteran remains the biggest star in combat sports despite retiring for the third time in four years last June amid frustration with his inability to book the fights he wanted due to the pandemic.

A lot of the details are yet to be officially announced, but here is what we've heard so far.

McGregor told the media before the Cerrone fight that he had been in discussions with Pacquiao with regards to a lucrative boxing match.

The booking means McGregor will return to action a little over a year after his last fight: a 40-second TKO win over Donald Cerrone on january 18, 2020.

The fight, which Dana White has said will not be for a title, is likely to go down on "Fight island" in Abu Dhabi.

Holloway, the former UFC featherweight champion from Waianae, Oahu, will be making his return to the Octogon on January 16 in the main event of a UFC Fight Night card, taking on Calvin Kattar in Las Vegas. He owns a 22-4 record in mixed martial arts.

McGregor is 3-2 overall since leaving the featherweight division.

Like McGregor, his last loss came at the hands of Khabib, via submission. After leaving the sport for almost two years to box Floyd Mayweather Jr., McGregor returned to try to earn his old belt back from Khabib Nurmagomedov, only to be submitted in the fourth round with a neck crank. He has wins over Max Holloway, Eddie Alvarez, Anthony Pettis and former champion Justin Gaethje. The fight itself wasn't too competitive though with McGregor landing the finishing strikes just 1:46 into the opening round.
