Happiest Season Is the Queer Holiday Rom-Com We've Been Waiting For

"It's such an exciting prospect, a gay Christmas rom com backed by Sony, no less", Stewart says. As well, she shares how the industry may be able to change how these roles are portrayed in the future.

Stewart rose to fame for portraying Bella Swan in the "Twilight Saga" film series before she began publicly dating women and confirmed she's bisexual in 2017. That's why Harper's invitation to meet her family comes as the flawless gift for Abby.

But Harper's dilemma is also understandable, the desire to be what your parents and friends expect set against what your heart truly wants.

Kristen Stewart thinks it's OK for straight actors who are allies to the LGBT+ community to play gay characters - as long as they do the work.

She said: "I think about this all the time". And don't get me wrong, I'm happy Happiest Season exists for those who will really wanted the gay version of this genre - I just wish the film seemed a little less afraid to ostracize straight audiences.

In an interview with IndieWire, Clea, the film's director and co-writer - she wrote it with Mary Holland - addressed concerns about the project coming together: "There were so many days I thought we were never going to get through and that we were never going to make it, and we did". "Obviously, she understands both of these characters very well". For her, the situation is a "gray area" with a lot of different factors to consider.

Stewart, who is bisexual, tells ABC Audio she relished the chance to tell this heartwarming - and very amusing - take on the typical holiday movie, which was co-written by real-life partners Mary Holland, who also co-stars, and director Clea Duvall. She explained, "It's a slippery slope conversation because that means I could never play another straight character if I'm going to hold everyone to the letter of this particular law". Ultimately, it's important that actors find ways to be allies and learn from each other through their work. There are ways for men to tell women's stories or ways for women to tell men's stories. Without the possibility that her parents won't accept Harper's relationship with Abby (it's never stated, but we just know it), it all feels too inevitable to care too much about any of it. "You kind of know where you're allowed", Kristen shared. I mean, if you're telling a story about a community and they're not welcoming to you, then f**k off. "But if they are, and you're becoming an ally and a part of it and there's something that drove you there in the first place that makes you uniquely endowed with a perspective that might be worthwhile".

Unlike Happiest Season, there's nothing particularly groundbreaking about Ammonite (other than it probably being the first lesbian love story that's also about fossils). I don't have a sure-shot answer for that'.

Happiest Season is streaming now on Hulu, much to the excitement of many LGBTQ+ fans who have been eagerly awaiting the chance to see a Christmas movie with lesbian leads-especially when those leads were Kristen Stewart and Mackenzie Davis, leading a cast that also includes Aubrey Plaza, Dan Levy, Victor Garber and Mary Steenburgen. However, she's aware that some people may feel differently about Davis being cast in the LGBTQ+ role.

Noting that her opinion could be biased, she added, "Sometimes, artfully speaking, you're just drawn to a certain group of people".
