Donald Trump returns to White House early, offers year-end message

U.S. President Donald Trump headed back to Washington from his Florida resort on Thursday, a day earlier than planned, as he continued his fight with Congress over a defence bill and stimulus checks as well as a long-shot bid to overturn his November election defeat. The move could delay the process as Congress hears objections. Iran's initial response, five days after that deadly USA drone strike, was a ballistic missile attack on a military base in Iraq that caused brain concussion injuries to about 100 USA troops.

An extension is consistent with Trump's hardline stance on immigration and passes on the decision over when and whether to lift the bans to President-elect Joe Biden, who takes office January 20.

The president's early departure for Washington, D.C., comes as guests are set to attend the annual New Year's Eve gala at Mar-a-Lago, at which Trump has made remarks for the previous three years of his presidency, according to The Hill.

The Trump administration had predicted that 20 million Americans would be vaccinated by the end of December. "With only a few days left in December, we've only vaccinated a few million so far", he said, adding that if the vaccinations continue at the current pace, it will take "years, not months, to vaccinate the American people".

The change in the president's plan also happened shortly after Senator Josh Hawley announced he would raise objections on January 6 when a joint session of Congress meets to accept the votes of the Electoral College.

Neither Trump nor the White House explained why he chose to shorten a vacation that had been expected to end on Friday. Josh Hawley, R-Mo., said that he plans to object when Congress meets to certify the results on January 6, which will force a vote but is unlikely to impact the result. Former Attorney General William Barr and other administration officials have said they saw no evidence of mass voter fraud, as Trump has claimed.

During his vacation, Trump also took near daily swipes on Twitter at Georgia Republican Gov. Brian Kemp and other state elections officials over his loss to Biden in that state. He went as far as barring them from his Christmas Day remarks to USA troops, which is the type of event the White House typically opens for news coverage.

Since losing the election and beginning a campaign to overturn the outcome, the usually chatty Trump has avoided engaging with reporters, even those who accompanied him to Florida. 'Instead, I hear them talk about their worries about how they will "look" to President Trump's most ardent supporters'.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell asked GOP senators not to engage in this effort because every one of his senators would have to go on-record and either dispute a state's result - or vote against Trump, which could have repurcussions down the line in the form of Trump-backed primary challengers.
