South Africa buys 1.5 million doses of AstraZeneca COVID vaccine

South Africa has yet to sign a large direct deal with any of those manufacturers.

Some of South Africa's hospitals are already reporting that they are at capacity.

Kenya has recorded 221 more Covid-19 positive cases in the last 24 hours as the country's total caseload rises to 97,954.

Emergency use authorisation has since been granted in India, Argentina, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Mexico and Morocco for the active immunisation of adults, it said.

He said the government intends to vaccinate 67% of the population by the end of 2021, which many experts say is an unrealistic goal.

She said the local government did not set a ceiling on the budget for vaccines since it will also negotiate for more supply from other pharmaceuticals.

Mkhize told a parliamentary committee Thursday that South Africa expects to spend the equivalent of $1.4 billion to acquire vaccines to inoculate two-thirds of the country's population. He said the majority of the vaccines will come from AstraZeneca, which will cost approximately $3.60 per dose in comparison to Moderna's cost of $36.40 per dose.

South Africa is holding direct talks with vaccine suppliers including J&J, AstraZeneca and Pfizer over supplies for the country, the presidency said.
