The New England Patriots head coach will follow a long line of legendary sports figures who have received the honor, Politico reported, citing a White House official.

Jordan's other work includes identifying millions of dollars in wasteful spending, unearthing the systemic targeting of conservative organizations by the IRS, and figuring out the truth behind the "Russia hoax", or the debunked theory that Trump and his campaign colluded with Russian Federation, the White House added. "I mean, this president has made a mockery of the Presidential Medal of Freedom".

For all the talk that President Trump has "cheapened" the award by handing it out to sports stars such as golfers Tiger Woods, Annika Sorenstam, Gary Player, football player Roger Staubach, and political allies, he has been downright tightfisted with awarding it.

A spokesperson for the Patriots did not respond to a request for comment.

According to the White House, the award is bestowed by the president on individuals who have made exceptional contributions to world peace, culture, US national interests, or "other significant public or private endeavors".

"Congratulations on a tremendous campaign", Belichick wrote, according to Trump.

Belichick wrote a letter to President Trump just before the election. "You have dealt with an unbelievable slanted and negative media, and have come out beautifully..."

Belichick, 68, just concluded his 46th season in the National Football League and 21st as Patriots coach. You've proved to be the ultimate competitor and fighter.

Said Belichick in a radio interview: "A very nice compliment". Hopefully tomorrow's election results will give the opportunity to make America great again.

The Pats, who've been coached by Belichick the past 21 years, finished out of the playoffs for the first time in the past 12 seasons. Best wishes for great results tomorrow.

Belichick later told an interviewer that their friendship "goes back many years", while adding that the letter wasn't politically motivated and that "anybody that's spent more than five minutes with me knows I'm not a political person". "But on the Thursday of the week in which Donald Trump is going to be impeached, that is not the right day to be accepting a Medal of Freedom award". "Look, this president is not fit to be in office".
