Eagles fire HC Doug Pederson

Pederson was expected to remain as coach despite a 4-11-1 finish this season, but multiple meetings with owner Jeffrey Lurie over the past week left his boss unconvinced that Pederson had a sound vision for how to address the myriad issues facing the team, sources said, from navigating the Carson Wentz situation to fixing an offense that finished 26th in scoring (20.9 PPG) and 28th in passing yards (207.9 YPG) in 2020.

Despite the Eagles' record, Pederson's offseason plans apparently had as much to do with his firing as Philadelphia's on-field performance.

The Philadelphia Eagles have fired Doug Pederson, NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reported.

Pederson led the Eagles to a Super Bowl victory over New England in just his second season with backup quarterback Nick Foles filling in after Wentz was injured.

"I have spent the last few weeks evaluating everything from this past year and looking ahead", said Lurie in an official statement. Quarterback Carson Wentz, an MVP candidate before he suffered a season-ending knee injury in 2017, regressed mightily this past season and was ultimately benched for rookie Jalen Hurts for the final four games of the season.

When I played it was a different ball game of course, we were really disappointed if we didn't win the league. United not only head to Burnley sitting pretty in the standings but boasting an enviable number of options.

NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported the decision to fire Pederson came down to one simple reality: The coach was exhausted of people telling him what to do.

The relationship between Pederson and Wentz was fractured this season. In Week 17 of the 2020 regular season, Pederson inexplicably turned to third-string quarterback Nate Sudfeld in the fourth quarter of their matchup with the Washington Football Team, benching Jalen Hurts and cratering the team's chances of winning.

We now know the outcome of those discussions, as the Eagles are set to find a new head coach, as well as identify who their starting quarterback will be heading into 2021.

"I've got the utmost respect for him", Pederson said, "and I feel like we can together get these things corrected and get back on track". In 2016, the Eagles hired Pederson from Reid's Chiefs staff to succeed Chip Kelly as Eagles coach. Pederson and Foles again led the Eagles to a playoff win the following season after Wentz went down late in the season.
