Jennings shared Trebek's advice about hosting Jeopardy! during an interview with Good Morning America last week.

Jennings is no stranger to Jeopardy!

Jeopardy! starts a new era on Monday night, airing the first episode of the long-running game show without Alex Trebek as host.

"I remember him just being very confident in me to be a guest host if he ever needed that", he said, adding that he was reminded by Trebek that "the host is not the star of Jeopardy!".

'I hope they feel that I have a sense of solidarity with them you know, that I'm rooting for them, that I how hard it is and how it feels, that when I'm impressed that's genuine because I know what they're going through - Alex was always on the contestant's side, as well'.

Jennings previously spoke about one of the final conversations he had with Trebek, which took place shortly before the beloved game show host died.

As a host, Jennings has studied at the altar of Trebek and clearly tried to make as few waves as possible.

A video tribute to Trebek closed Friday's episode of the quiz show, the final one that he taped before pancreatic cancer claimed his life on November 8.

Jennings, who won 74 games in a row to capture the show's record for longest winning streak, said that after hosting, he has more appreciation for the veteran TV personality's mastery of his craft.

The victor will "be joining us tomorrow, and I hope you join us as well", Jennings said as he wrapped up the show. "It's just sad for me to go out there, in a way, because I know that, like the audience, I wish it was Alex walking out at the top of the show".

"I don't want to have it because it means we don't get Alex", Jennings says.

Jeopardy! will announce other guest hosts at a later date.
