Gov. Eric Holcomb said he had authorized 625 Guard soldiers going to Washington from Saturday until two days after Biden's January 20 inauguration.

The U.S. Capitol has taken on the aura of a siege in recent days, with a wall springing up around the perimeter of the complex, and National Guard troops sleeping in the halls of the seat of government.

While Congress acted to impeach him, President Donald Trump on Wednesday urged his supporters to shun violence as the National Guard prepared to deploy at least 20,000 troops in Washington for the January 20 swearing-in of his successor Joe Biden.

As the US braces for more pro-Trump extremism in the weeks leading up to President-elect Joe Biden's inauguration, the Pentagon has approved armed National Guardsmen to be deployed to the US Capitol, Politico reported. "That's lawlessness. That's terror", Jeffries said.

Officials have said it is important for the troops to be armed for their self defense and that they are still in a support role of law enforcement forces.

"The Army is committed to working closely with the F.B.I.as they identify people who participated in the violent attack on the Capitol to determine if the individuals have any connection to the Army", the statement said while adding that any type of activity that "involves violence, civil disobedience, or a breach of peace", may be punishable under the Uniform Code of Military Justice or under state and federal law. A Defense official said up to 20,000 Guardsmen will be part of inauguration security for Biden on January 20, and most will arrive by this weekend.
