Two players - America's Denis Kudla and Argentinian Francisco Cerundolo - tested positive to coronavirus during Australian Open qualifying in Doha this week.

Andy Murray's participation in the Australian Open is in doubt after it was announced on Thursday he had tested positive for coronavirus.

A spokesperson for COVID-19 Quarantine Victoria said it was common among people who had previously tested positive to "shed viral fragments for some time - which can trigger another positive result".

Over 1,000 players and coaches have started arriving for this year's event, which has already been delayed by three weeks.

Players are due to touch down in Melbourne on charter flights from seven cities, although the game's biggest stars, including Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Serena Williams, will arrive in Adelaide and quarantine there.

Tennis Australia said Sandgren, like all of the 1200-strong worldwide contingent, would be tested every day at their three hotels during the 14-day quarantine period.

The three-time major victor is hoping to make his first appearance in Melbourne since the emotional events of 2019, when he revealed the extent of his right hip problem and raised the possibility of imminent retirement.

On Wednesday, almost 12,000 kilometers (7,500 miles) from Melbourne, the qualifying tournament was completed for the tournament, with 16 men and 16 women set to join the singles main draw.

Organisers Tennis Australia were not immediately available to comment.

Tennis Australia said any athlete who has recovered from COVID-19 must undergo a similar health review and earn "special clearance" from the authorities before travelling to Australia.

The 15 flights will be at no more than 25% capacity, and will arrive over a 36-hour period ending early Saturday.

All the competitors must quarantine, but they will be allowed out of their rooms after a negative test in order to train under strict conditions for five hours each day.

The Australian Open draw will be held on February 4, four days ahead of the start of the main tournament, which ends February 21 with the men's singles final. Even if he succeeds, though, there can be virtually no chance that he will be able to play a build-up event.

Murray has not competed in Melbourne since 2019 when tournament officials gave him a retirement ceremony.
