Beijing steps up COVID-19 response amid most severe outbreak since March

China reported more than 100 new Covid-19 cases for the sixth consecutive day yesterday, with rising infections in the north-east fuelling concerns of another national wave when hundreds of millions travel for the Chinese New Year holiday.

An official from Gaocheng confirmed the authenticity of the footage to local reporters. However, he declined to provide further comments.

The total of confirmed COVID-19 cases in mainland China stands at 88,227, while the death toll remains unchanged at 4,635.

That figure was down from 135 cases a day earlier, China's National Health Commission said on Saturday. China does not include people who test positive but have no symptoms in its count.

A team of experts from World Health Organization are quarantined in Wuhan ahead of beginning field visits aiming to shed light on the origins of the virus that is thought to have jumped to humans from animals, possibly bats.
