President-elect Joe Biden announced Tuesday that he will nominate top Pennsylvania health official, Rachel Levine, to be his assistant secretary of health.

Levine has previously won state Senate confirmation in Pennsylvania, including a unanimous vote in 2015 to endorse her as Pennsylvania's physician general. During her tenure, she has helped the state navigate the opioid crisis, manage a growing medical marijuana industry and lead its response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Vice President-elect Kamala Harris praised Levine as "a remarkable public servant with the knowledge and experience" to help contain the coronavirus pandemic and "protect and improve the health and well-being of the American people". Instead he's just a thug.

Levine is a physician who is now serving as Pennsylvania's secretary of health.

Dr Levine joins Mr Biden's Health and Human Services secretary nominee Xavier Becerra, a Latino politician who rose from humble beginnings to serve in Congress and as California's attorney general.

Levine made controversial moves early in the pandemic when she pulled her 95-year-old mother out of a care facility at a time with elderly patients at long-term care centers saw COVID-19 racing through their facilities.

After Dr Levine received a promotion to become Pennsylvania's health secretary, the coronavirus raised her profile across the state.

"Pharmacies will be very important and necessary, but not sufficient", Levine said.

"This decision likely contributed to the thousands of elderly deaths in Pennsylvania", Republican Rep. Steve Scalise of Louisiana and other Republican leaders wrote in a June 15 letter to Democratic Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf, according to WITF-TV. It was there that she created an adolescent medicine division at the hospital, and a clinic for eating disorders.

The government's top infectious disease expert, Dr Anthony Fauci, will also work closely with the Biden administration.

"Her nomination is groundbreaking and shows the Biden administration will choose the most qualified individuals to lead our nation regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity", Annise Parker, former Houston mayor and president & CEO of LGBTQ Victory Institute, said in a statement. About half of the incoming president's cabinet and staff including people of color, many of whom are the first of their background to serve in a president's administration. "We need to get the vaccines into arms". With Democrat wins in Georgia in both Senate races earlier in January, Democrats hold exactly half of the seats in the Senate.
