However, it seems that the company is now filling the void between the two series with the launch of the Snapdragon 870 5G chipset. The Snapdragon 870 SoC is a flagship-grade chip based on last year's 7nm TSMC process as opposed to the new 5nm EUV process as the Snapdragon 888.

The name change and incremental clock update might be little more than marketing spin for the new year but you can be sure of at least one thing - your just-under-flagship hardware with an 870 will outclass 2020's flagships.

The new Snapdragon 870 was specifically created to address OEM and mobile industry requirement.

The basis here is again a Qualcomm Kryo 585 CPU, which is combined with the Adreno 650 GPU. If you don't care about any of that, though, you should be fine with an 870.

The 870 can also drive up to 4K 60Hz displays, or QHD+ at 144Hz. The mobile platform comes with a host of features like support for Bluetooth 5.2, up to 200-megapixels single camera, Qualcomm Spectra 480 image signal processor, Qualcomm Quick Charge 4+ technology, and Qualcomm 3D as well as 3D Sonic Max fingerprint sensor. It includes Snapdragon X55 5G Modem-RF System and the Qualcomm FastConnect6800 Subsystem for faster 5G connectivity. There's also dual-camera support with up to 25-megapixels @ 30 FPS with Zero Shutter Lag. There is support for up to LPDDR5 memory with a maximum frequency of up to 2750 MHz. There is 4K video capture and 8K video capture at 8K support as well. This makes the CPU on the Snapdragon 870 SoC the fastest till date. It also supports Wi-Fi 6, which is a downgrade from Wi-Fi 6E support found aboard the Snapdragon 865+ chipset.

As for the timeline, Qualcomm suggests we can see smartphones running on the Snapdragon 870 5G in the first quarter of 2021 itself. Some of these include the likes of Motorola, OnePlus, iQOO, and Xiaomi.
