To celebrate his unique career, NFL Films dropped a video that highlighted one of the best parts of Philip Rivers: His mouth.

"Every year, January 20 is a special and emotional day", Rivers' statement read.

Rivers' decision to step away was a pretty simple one.

Rivers didn't just play in the league - he created a legacy few achieve. My name is Damond Talbot, I have worked extremely hard to help hundreds of small school players over the past several years, and will continue my mission. "I couldn't hold it, grip it, palm it, so I had to kind of lay it in my hand a little bit. I got to do it". Selected by the New York Giants, he was involved in a draft-night swap with the then-San Diego Chargers for No. 1 overall pick Eli Manning.

Rivers announced his decision to the San Diego Union-Tribune days after Colts general manager Chris Ballard indicated a move might be coming.

In the 2006 season opener, Rivers made his starting debut - and then the next 251 in a row including the playoffs.

His 240 consecutive regular-season starts was the second-longest streak since 1970, trailing only Brett Favre (297), and it was one of the few stats Rivers cherished.

Rivers said that he'd considered retirement in recent years, but that "this is the first year I felt like the ending was real". "I do think there is something about that availability, being there each and every week".

But he was more than just dependable with his unusual, shot put-like throwing motion.

"It was awesome", Rivers said of his career. He has never made it to the Super Bowl.

Tom Brady and Drew Brees' Family Share Touching Moment After Saints Loss
Brady has taken his game to a different level since the start of this year's NFL Playoffs. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed the peerless Tom Brady to win.

Rivers' 421 passing touchdowns ranks fifth all time and has a lot of gaudy numbers to go along with it, including over 63,000 passing yards, which also ranks fifth all time.

Age didn't slow him down, either.

Rivers is now going to follow in his father's footsteps and coach high school football. Rivers recently concluded the 2020 National Football League season with the Colts after bouncing out of the Wild Card Round against the Buffalo Bills in the postseason.

He did all of it while playing the final seven games with an injured toe on his right foot. During his final campaign, he completed 68 percent of his passes for 4,169 yards with 24 touchdowns and 11 interceptions while averaging 7.7 yards per attempt.

Leonard was hoping Rivers would return.

"No, it's not that easy", Rivers said.

Rivers finally decided it was time to leave.

Rivers' hiring as the head football coach at St. Michael Catholic High School in Fairhope, Ala., effective when he retired, was announced last May.

And where those children may flawless the motion Rivers made famous.

"A young kid from Northern Alabama who grew up wanting to play pro ball", Rivers said.
