Baalke joined the team's front office as director of pro personnel in early February of 2020 and was working under general manager Dave Caldwell before Caldwell was sacked at the end of November. Per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Trent Baalke will be removing the "interim" label from his job title and will now be replacing Dave Caldwell. Baalke's experience with the Jaguars roster and free-agent plans also played a role. After being let go by the Niners in 2016, Baalke spent some time away from football until returning previous year as the Jaguars head of pro personnel.

The Jacksonville Jaguars are expected to hire Trent Baalke as their next general manager, according to sources.

Before becoming the 49ers general manager, Baalke was a director of player personnel with the 49ers and a scout.
