As many as 72 players are confined to their hotel rooms for 14 days and unable to train for the February 8-21 Australian Open after passengers on three charter flights to Melbourne returned positive tests for COVID-19.

Both Tennis Australia and the ATP did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.

Although the identity of the player has not been revealed, it has been confirmed that it was not one of the players in quarantine, and rather one who had been training.

She is required to spend at least 10 days in isolation from the date of her positive test, but that could be extended to 14 days if she is found to have the more virulent United Kingdom strain of the virus.

A string of infections detected by Australian authorities have forced dozens of players to be confined to their hotel rooms for two weeks. The 14 day quarantine is there for a reason.
