Three NY National Guard Troops Killed In Helicopter Crash

Multiple fire departments responded to the crash, as well as state police and representatives of the USA military, the sheriff's office said.

The statement, shared on Twitter by WXXI News, said that the UH-60 Black Hawk medical evacuation helicopter crashed around 6:30 Mendon, a rural town about 17 miles southeast of Rochester. The UH-60, which has been used by the U.S. military for over 40 years, plays numerous roles, including air-assault and medical evacuation missions.

"This is a heavy heavy burden on all of us", Monroe County Sheriff Todd Baxter said.

"According to the 911 reports. there were calls of a sputtering, the sounds of an engine and that the aircraft was flying very low, more low than normal", Baxter said. And, again, just showing again that freedom is not free.

It had flown out of the Army Aviation Support Facility at Rochester International Airport, and was assigned to C Company of the 1st Battalion, 171st General Support Aviation Battalion, Durr said.

Mendon Fire Chief Peter Kester told reporters that the aircraft was engulfed in flames when first responders arrived at the scene.

He said local authorities had spent the day identifying and roping off the crash site with the use of a drone and police canine. "We lost three fearless Americans today in the service of our country", Baxter said.

Three National Guard members on a routine training flight were killed Wednesday when their helicopter crashed in a western NY town, an official said.

The road closest to the crash site was blocked by emergency services.

In respect for the deceased, the Governor has ordered all flags on state buildings to be lowered to half-staff.

It was not immediately clear what caused the crash.
