Moderna vaccine effective against UK, SA strains and promising Israeli data

Moderna says its COVID-19 vaccine protects against worrisome emerging variants of the coronavirus, but it's taking the precaution of testing a possible booster dose against the strain discovered in South Africa.

The second shot was being given up to 35 days from the first.

There was no impact on the level of neutralizing antibodies for the B.1.1.7 (UK) variant, meaning the company's vaccine was equally as effective against the United Kingdom variant as the original.

In a new study released this week, and funded by the International Chamber of Commerce, researchers said that vaccine inequality among nations could lead to more than $9 trillion in global economic losses, half of which would be borne by advanced economies, even if they vaccinated their entire populations.

Moderna reported mostly good news on Monday about two new variants of the coronavirus, though the Washington Post sees an "ominous" red flag in the mix.

There are 4,392 active cases of the virus in B.C., 328 people are in hospital, 68 of whom are in intensive care.

Principal deputy director for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Dr. Anne Schuchat told Reuters: "We are adding South Africa to the restricted list because of the concerning variant present that has already spread beyond South Africa".
