Widespread internet outage hits US East Coast

Amazon Web Services too said it was investigating connectivity issues with an external internet provider, or a third-party network on Tuesday.

Verizon said a fiber cut in Brooklyn was to blame for a massive outage Tuesday that affected thousands of customers in the northeastern USA - at the same time that services such as Google and Zoom appeared to suffer issues as well. Verizon reported a fiber cut in Brooklyn via Twitter, although it's not clear if that issue is responsible for the entire outage.

Verizon said in a statement that it was working on the problem impacting Fios service "throughout the Northeast corridor" and that some service had already been restored.

Inc's cloud computing arm said it is investigating connectivity issues with an internet provider, which was causing disruptions to AWS services, and in turn to many online services that rely on it. That densely populated area includes key US government services as well as major financial companies such as Fidelity Investments. It said its services were operating normally.

"We didn't see it as a major issue", Gaspar said. High-speed internet connections have become a lifeline during the Covid-19 pandemic as millions of office staff, students, health-care professionals and others use broadband to work remotely.

According DownDetector, which monitors outrages in real-time, reports of these issues began around 11 a.m. Tuesday morning. He also reported a 12% fall in traffic volume to Verizon.

Madory said he did not yet know if other carriers were impacted. "Hopefully things will be solved soon!"

A Verizon spokesperson said in an email that they are looking into the issue. "Teachers have been able to keep on moving".

"If Outlook works but YouTube doesn't, whose fault is it?"
