Matt Reeves, who is now working on The Batman, was the director of Cloverfield and THR reports that he's not involved with the sequel. Abrams will again produce through Bad Robot, but Reeves will not be involved in the new film. However, considering that most of the original cast died in the 2008 film, we imagine that Cloverfield 2 will probably follow a new set of characters, possibly still fighting the vengeful creature and its smaller parasite creatures from the original film.

The Star Wars sequel trilogy head will return to produce the film via his Bad Robot banner alongside the label's Head of Film Hannah Minghella and Paramount Pictures, while original director Reeves and writer Goddard are not now set to return in any capacity.

According to THR, this new movie will be a direct sequel to Cloverfield, which ended on a cliffhanger that left it unclear if the nuclear explosion that occurs in the film's final moments actually killed the monster terrorizing Manhattan. The original Cloverfield film scored a really impressive $172 million against a tiny $25 million budget.

Though they were developed as separate films, the story elements of both "10 Cloverfield Lane" from 2016 and "The Cloverfield Paradox" from 2018 were fashioned into becoming part of a shared universe, telling different perspectives of the same monster attack, the first from the confines of a man harboring two strangers in a bunker during the attack, and the other from the view of scientists in outer space.

To give you an idea of what that was like in case you never saw "Cloverfield", imagine seeing this in a darkened cinema. No one knows. If there's one thing Abrams is good at, it's keeping plot details of his projects under wraps until opening night (he does love his Mystery Box).

Though "Cloverfield" spawned two movies that were each set in a shared universe, "10 Cloverfield Lane" and "The Cloverfield Paradox", an individual with knowledge tells TheWrap the new film will be a direct sequel to the 2008 original.
