Trump flexes political muscle, meets top House Republican

CNN cited unnamed sources as saying that five lawyers - including two who were thought to be leading Trump's impeachment fight - had parted ways with the former US President after disagreeing over his legal strategy.

Former US president Donald Trump's team says he plans to remain involved with the Republican party and had a "very good and cordial" meeting with Republican House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy.

"President Trump's popularity has never been stronger than it is today, and his endorsement means perhaps more than any endorsement at any time".

Trump's commitment also includes the majority in the Senate, which Republicans knocked off by the smallest margin possible in early January.

One Democrat said he felt that June 14 would be "disrespectful".

It leaves Trump's defense team in turmoil as he prepares for a trial starting on February 8 to consider an article of impeachment passed by the House of Representatives charging Trump with inciting the January 6 storming of the U.S. Capitol by his followers. Trump's team told Fox News the former president would promote GOP House candidates in the next election.

Cheney's decision drew praise from Democrats, but calls are growing within the GOP for a vote to remove the congresswoman as chair of the House Republican Conference. Instead of debating whether he is guilty of "willfully inciting violence against the government of the United States", Republicans have instead attacked the process, arguing that it is unconstitutional to try a president who has already left the White House. "More than half of the Republican conference has said that this person does not speak for us".

After those members faced intense backlash from Trump supporters, Senate Republicans voted overwhelmingly Tuesday for an attempt to dismiss his second impeachment trial.

It would still need 10 Republicans to go along in order to overcome any blocking tactics set out by Trump loyalists.
