Three other lawyers associated with the team, Josh Howard of North Carolina and Johnny Gasser and Greg Harris of SC, also parted ways with Trump, another source said.

Bowers, a respected lawyer from Columbia, South Carolina, once worked in the Justice Department under U.S. President George W. Bush.

Two of his lead impeachment lawyers, Butch Bowers and Deborah Barbier, and Trump parted ways, a source familiar with the matter told NPR.

In addition, CNN reported on Saturday night that a third member of Trump's prospective legal team, Josh Howard, was also leaving.

Two Republicans in OH have reportedly suggested that June 14 become "Donald J. Trump Day" in the state. He declared that Mr Joe Biden was the victor of the November election and that Mr Trump "bears responsibility for attack on Congress by mob rioters". He also acknowledged plans to defend Trump in a federal court filing on Wednesday, where he will ask a judge to delay some proceedings because he had "accepted a position on the defense team handling the pending impeachment trial", Howard wrote in the filing.

Barbier, a SC litigator, worked closely on several high-profile cases and was a former federal prosecutor for 15 years in the state before opening up her own boutique criminal defense firm.

Trump's second impeachment is scheduled to begin on February 9.

Trump's first impeachment by the Democratic-controlled House occurred in December 2019.

"The Democrats' efforts to impeach a president who has already left office is totally unconstitutional and so bad for our country", Miller said.

The trial is coming at the same time Biden is trying to strike a deal on his $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief package and after a Senate vote this week that saw just five Republicans voting against a motion to call the trial unconstitutional.

"I'm really shocked by this", said Dick Harpootlian, a prominent SC lawyer and longtime Democratic official in the state who has argued several cases against Bowers and knows him well.

The upheaval injects fresh uncertainty into the makeup and strategy of Trump's defence team as he prepares to face charges that he incited the insurrection at the US Capitol on January 6. "We have done much work, but have not made a final decision on our legal team, which will be made shortly", Miller said.
