Cole argues against legislation to strip Greene of committees

In a statement Tuesday that didn't use Greene's name, the usually circumspect McConnell called her "loony lies" a "cancer" on the GOP.

Greene has come under bipartisan fire for inflammatory support of conspiracy theories and online calls for violence against Democrats in recent years before she was elected. The lawmaker has also been linked to several other baseless theories, including QAnon and Pizzagate, and has falsely claimed that an airplane never hit the Pentagon on 9/11.

Which means that, nearly certainly, the fate of Greene's committee service will be left to the Democratic House majority - taking McCarthy entirely (or mostly) out of the picture.

"None of this would have happened without the President", Cheney wrote in a January 12 statement assigning blame for the riot at the Capitol that left five people dead, including a police officer, and temporarily stopped the counting of Electoral College votes that showed Democrat Joe Biden the victor of the November election.

U.S. Rep. Liz Cheney attends a congressional tribute to the late Capitol Police officer Brian Sicknick who lies in honor in the Rotunda of the U.S. Capitol on February 3, 2021.

Cheney foes have said they have enough votes to force her Cheney's removal from her leadership job.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., issued a statement on Monday praising Cheney as "a leader with deep convictions and courage". Senators need only look at the House infighting with Trump loyalists and conservatives like Cheney.

But Hoyer released a statement saying that after speaking to House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., "it is clear there is no alternative to holding a floor vote on the resolution to remove Rep. Greene from her committee assignments".

Google and Facebook continue to argue that media organisations benefit from referrals and clicks through to their websites. Bing is Australia's second most popular search engine, but the gap between it and Google is vast in terms of market share.

McCarthy has also been meeting privately with Greene to discuss Democrats' outrage following the revelation of her social media posts advancing numerous conspiracy theories about the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks and mass school shootings, as well as her liking a Facebook post calling for the execution of Democratic leaders, including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi of California. And/but he needs the support of the Trump wing - as represented by Greene - in order to wind up as speaker, and not face a challenge from the likes of Rep. Jim Jordan of OH or some other Trumpy Republican member.

After a lengthy meeting with Greene on Tuesday night in which she refused to apologize for her past actions, a person with knowledge of the matter told CNN, McCarthy foisted the matter onto the Republican Steering Committee.

A number of House Republicans gave Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene a standing ovation during a Wednesday meeting. He is having to guide the House GOP through one of its most contentious periods, but his favoured approach of avoiding ruffling feathers has been criticized by some Republicans who think he needs to be more decisive.

During the meeting, Rep. Tom Rice of SC - who also voted to impeach - criticized McCarthy for trekking down to Mar-a-Lago last week to make amends with Trump, according to sources inside the room.

Overnight, she said, she raised $160,000.

"Instead of coming together to do that, the Democrats are choosing to raise the temperature by taking the unprecedented step to further their partisan power grab regarding the committee assignments of the other party", McCarthy said in a statement. House Republicans are effectively deciding whether to prioritize the former president's norm-shattering behavior and conspiracy theories and retain the loyalty of his voters over more establishment conservative values.

Senate Republicans have turned on her. "I also made clear that as a member of Congress we have a responsibility to hold ourselves to a higher standard than how she presented herself as a private citizen".

McCarthy has said he supports Cheney but also has "concerns", leaving his stance on her unclear.
