He got extremely close too, winning the interim strap before failing to unify it against Khabib Nurmagomedov.

Dustin Poirier reacts after his knockout victory over Conor McGregor of Ireland in a lightweight fight during the UFC 257 event inside Etihad Arena on UFC Fight Island on January 23, 2021 in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Speaking in a recent interview, he explained what it is like having to have everyone gunning for him like this.

"I'm not sure if the UFC would do that", Poirier said.

According to a report published by Brazilian outlet AgFight, "Do Bronx" was offered a fight against Michael Chandler at UFC 258 on February 13, with the victor moving on to face Dustin Poirier for the lightweight belt.

"Gaethje just came out here and got beat". You've got to beat the next guys in line, so I understand why the target is on my back, and I wear it proudly. Dude, I'm the champ.

The pair are now locked on 1-1 with a finish apiece, and McGregor's coaches have been calling for an immediate rematch for the title - much to the chagrin of the rest of the lightweight division.

It remains to be seen whether the eight-division world champion will face McGregor or a different opponent. "Also beating Conor, a two-weight world champion, adds another world champion to the list of guys I've taken out". I am the champ. No", Poirier said. "Does it make sense standing in the door front of a title shot? No. But even in the title mix with Charles Oliveira and Michael Chandler, there is a high chance that there will be a fight for the vacant title.

"I want to be the world champion, and Charles is a guy that's paid his dues", Poirier said.

Gaethje comments arrive after Chandler himself recently revealed he accepted a short-notice fight at UFC 258, only to have his mystery opponent pull out. "They were probably $50,000 or $100,000 off one of their contracts, and they didn't put the contract together and those guys were ready to fight". What's Next For Dustin Poirier?

"Then he had another year out, and then he fought this guy, [Dustin] Poirier".

Conor McGregor is 3-3 in his last six. However he says that this is not something that has been discussed with him, in any real way. If that bout is offered to Poirier, he said he would be interested. "I didn't have any names being thrown around necessarily, but I knew that it would somebody - by process of elimination - ranked ahead of me".

The report claims that Paradigm Sports, the management company that represents both fighters, could resurrect plans to engineer a crossover bout despite the unfavourable result last month.
