The Government has confirmed 11 cases of the new South African variant have been identified which were not linked to travel.

She said: "New variants of a virus develop all the time, and coronavirus is no exception".

The experts found only 11 out of 214,159 samples with the E484K mutation.

Pfizer and BioNTech have also said that their COVID-19 vaccine works against human-made lab variants containing the E484K mutation.

Door-to-door coronavirus testing is being rolled out in parts of England in an attempt to stem the outbreak of a more contagious variant discovered in South Africa.

Coronavirus 'mutations of concern' found in Bristol and Liverpool

Spain has detected its second known case of infection with the South African coronavirus variant in the northeastern region of Catalonia, officials said on Wednesday, a day after the government made a decision to restrict air travel with Brazil and South Africa. "Is that something that you're going to do forever, because it looks like these strains may continue to arise in the long term?" Julian Tang, from the University of Leicester said, "it is a worrying development", although not totally unexpected.

Liz Noakes, Telford and Wrekin's director of public health, said the developments illustrated the need to follow current lockdown guidelines - created to stop the transmission of the virus. Testing will, in combination with following the lockdown rules and remembering "Hands". Researchers believe the mutation could help the virus escape the antibodies produced by the body after a previous infection or after receiving a vaccine shot.

However, there is no evidence that Covid-19 vaccines that have been approved won't work against the new strain, although results from human clinical trials in South Africa suggest decreased efficiency of these vaccines as against the older variants. Although, the immune response of the body may not be as strong or prolonged.

"From Saturday, the 6th of February, foreign citizens who want to enter Sweden will have to show a negative COVID-19 test", Prime Minister Stefan Lofven told a news conference. During its Phase 3 United Kingdom trial, Novavax said its vaccine was 89% effective against COVID-19. These could also appear to provide good cover against strains, shielding from severe illness.

The announcement was made five days after the Public Health Agency requested tighter arrival controls to minimize the spread of mutated virus strains.
