A phone call between Trump and House Republican leader Kevin McCarthy emerged during the impeachment trial in which McCarthy, as rioters stormed the Capitol, begged Trump to call off the mob.

Seven Republican senators joined Democrats in voting to convict former President Donald Trump in his second impeachment trial, making it the most bipartisan vote of its kind in US history.

North Carolina Republican Chairman Michael Whatley defended a decision to censure Sen.

Burr, who is not running for reelection next year after three six-year terms in the Senate, said in response, "It is truly a sad day for North Carolina Republicans".

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell speaks after the Senate acquitted former President Donald Trump in his second impeachment trial in the Senate at the US Capitol. "And that we lay bare the record of just how responsible and how abjectly violating of his constitutional oath President Trump really was".

While a majority of the Senate, 57 of the 100 members, voted for conviction, it fell short of the two-thirds majority required.

But the move - along with similar actions against other Republicans who turned on Trump - shows the enduring strength of Trump's support within the GOP, especially at the state and local level. "The Senate's first and foundational duty was to protect the Constitution".

Moreover, Aronberg said, "There isn't a recording" of Graham's conversation with Raffensperger - whereas there is a recording of Trump's conversation with the Georgia secretary of state. That's the same level of support he had in November, Morning Consult reports, before it slipped just after the January 6 attack on the US Capitol. He then said in a statement that the Senate's vote to proceed with the trial established a precedent that a former president could be impeached. However House managers, led by Rep Jamie Raskin, have correctly argued that actually calling witnesses would not have changed enough Republican votes set into stone, from acquit to convict, and that needlessly prolonging the trial risked losing votes to convict.

Can Trump be prosecuted for acts he engaged in as president? Yes.

On Friday, the original leaders of the September 11 Commission sent a letter to President Joe Biden and congressional leaders calling for an independent bipartisan investigation of the deadly assault on the Capitol. Pat Toomey over his vote to convict Trump, according to county party officials.

"All I wanted to do was do my job, and the insurrection that occurred prevented me from doing that", Thompson, D-Miss., told reporters Tuesday as he recounted his harrowing experiences as Trump loyalists broke into the Capitol and disrupted the constitutionally mandated process of certifying the election.

The 25 members of the Tar Heel State GOP unanimously voted to deliver the stinging rebuke of Burr during a closed-door meeting of the group's central committee, the party said in a statement.

Sasse was already facing a censure effort by the Nebraska Republican Party before his guilty vote.

These lawsuits proceeded during Trump's presidency, but could unfold more quickly now that he is out office because he cannot use his status as president to postpone deadlines. He doesn't have what it takes, never did, and never will.

Former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley, the subject of a lengthy Politico profile where she distances herself from Trump, is at 6 per cent. "I think the idea that the Republican Party is just one's just not nuanced".
