Trump was acquitted after House Democrats accused Trump of inciting the January 6 insurrection.

To help make its case, the lawsuit says that claims made by Trump and Giuliani about the integrity of the election laid the foundation for the violence of January 6, which was brought to a head by Trump's rally.

"President Trump is still liable for everything he did while he was in office, as an ordinary citizen, unless the statute of limitations has run, still liable for everything he did while in office, didn't get away with anything yet - yet", Mr. McConnell said on the Senate floor. "We want brilliant, strong, thoughtful, and compassionate leadership". The former President and his attorney, Rudy Giuliani, are being accused of conspiring with the far-right groups Proud Boys and Oath Keepers to incite the insurrection in a civil lawsuit filed Tuesday in federal court by the chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, Mississippi Democrat Bennie Thompson, in his personal capacity.

Surprisingly, after Trump's acquittal, the number of people in the party who think he should play a major role in the Republican party has increased by 18 per cent.

Sen. Lindsey Graham, a longtime Trump loyalist, told Fox News on Tuesday that while the two men together "did a hell of a job, they're now at each other's throat". He's laying the groundwork now, and I guarantee you, that will be the litmus test for Trump's support in 2022.

Banned from Twitter-his erstwhile weapon of choice for attacking critics-Trump fired his broadside, which blamed McConnell (R-Ky.) for Republicans' loss of Senate control, via a statement from his Save America super PAC. "We don't have a snowball's chance in hell of taking back the majority without Donald Trump".

'If you are an official at any level of the government ... reading 70 percent want a full accounting and you're in a job that in any way reports to the public, [if] you're not cooperating it does look bad, ' said Al Felzenberg, who served as a spokesman for the September 11th commission.

Following the November presidential election, Giuliani went to several states Trump lost in an attempt to overturn the results, and was at the January 6 "Stop the Steal" rally in Washington, D.C. During the event, which took place immediately before a pro-Trump mob stormed the Capitol, Giuliani told the crowd, "Let's have trial by combat".

"In a Wall Street Journal column on Monday (local time), he repeated his claim, writing: "[Trump's] supporters stormed the Capitol because of the unhinged falsehoods he shouted into the world's largest megaphone". We could sit here and talk about our problems with Donald Trump, but people who support him in little ecosystem bubbles, they don't hear us screaming that we're so fed up with what he did tonight and all of these things.

In his statement, Trump criticized McConnell for failing to do more to back his unfounded claims of election fraud.

That call while the riot raged appeared to show Trump siding with the rioters over McCarthy, according to a statement by Rep. Jamie Herrera Beutler.
