"There can be no doubt that the queen and the family will be concerned but the palace is saying that this is a precautionary measure and it is not the first time he has been hospitalized in recent years in a similar way", said ABC News royal contributor Victoria Murphy.

The statement from the palace revealed he was likely to stay in hospital for a few days of rest and observation.

But palace spokespeople have gone out of their way to emphasise that this was not an emergency admission and that it was precautionary.

He was taken to hospital by auto and walked in unaided.

Prince Philip, who is expected to celebrate his 100th birthday in June, was vaccinated against the coronavirus in January along with his wife, Queen Elizabeth II.
