Who are Neera Tanden and Vivek Murthy? As I've said before, we must take meaningful steps to end the political division ... that pervades our politics.

"I have carefully reviewed Neera Tanden's public statements and tweets that were personally directed towards my colleagues on both sides of the aisle, from Senator Sanders to Senator McConnell and others", said Manchin.

Ms. Tanden deleted about 1,000 tweets in recent months, a move that Ms. Collins cited in explaining her opposition to her nomination. But Democrats and interest groups say she is being unfairly targeted because of her gender and race.

While 30 House Democrats are asking President Joe Biden to relinquish his sole authority to launch nuclear weapons, Utah Republican Sen.

McCarthy said wish-list provisions included in the relief bill are even causing some Democrats like Senator Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) to push against it. Her fate was sealed the moment Democratic Senator Joe Manchin announced that he would cross party lines and join Republicans in opposing her nomination. In return, Tanden, who runs perhaps the largest progressive policy firm in the USA, tagged the young person's employer, at the time a progressive Senate campaign, in a reply. And the policy clashes clouding the confirmation hopes of candidates such as Haaland and Tanden are quite predictable, since they mirror the chasms between the parties. Bernie Sanders, a Vermont independent who caucuses with Democrats, who now chairs the Budget Committee and would be her principal contact.

But the Senate's Democratic leaders are staying out of the fray, giving Manchin a great deal of deference for a simple, practical reason: He's their 50th vote. Susan Collins of Maine, Rob Portman of OH and Mitt Romney of Utah announced their opposition. A person familiar with the discussion said House Democratic leadership has backed Young for the job. "It's becoming apparent this higher standard applies primarily to nominees of color and it particularly hurts with historic nominations like Neera's". At least one moderate Democrat, Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona, has also not publicly committed to supporting Tanden.

Tanden apologized broadly for her social media posts during her confirmation hearing. A transition official acknowledged the effort, saying it had been ongoing since December.

Asian Americans have been fuming for weeks that Biden failed to name a Cabinet secretary of Asian American or Pacific Islander descent, though he tapped two for Cabinet-level positions: Tanden, president of the liberal think tank Center for American Progress, and Katherine Tai to be U.S. Trade Representative.

She said she spoke to Milley 'to discuss available precautions for preventing an unstable president from initiating military hostilities or accessing the launch codes and ordering a nuclear strike'. Her nomination is historic since she would be the first Native American Cabinet member.

Without any Republican support, and with Democratic Sen.

She had claimed that Russian Federation was trying to help him. "She seems to have chosen a path that doesn't lead to a Senate-confirmed office", Republican Kevin Cramer said previous year.

In the case of Murthy, he was removed by former President Donald Trump as the surgeon general in 2017.

"The tone, the content, and the aggressive partisanship of some of Ms Tanden's public statements will make it more hard for her to work effectively with both parties", Portman said.

The senator from Alaska told ABC News on Monday that she too had not spoken with the White House about Tanden and was still mulling over her decision.
