California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported at least 13 people died from an accident involving an SUV and tractor-trailer near Holtville, California.

The El Centro Regional Medical Center said during a Tuesday news conference that there were 28 passengers inside an "SUV" that struck a semi-truck full of gravel. We're not sure exactly what caused the collision. An SUV carrying more than two dozen people was traveling west on Norrish Road, approaching the intersection with the state road.

"I was trying to figure out how to stop the deaths", said Hunter, whose brother Duncan strongly advocated for border wall construction as a congressman.

The injured occupants were taken to El Centro Regional Medical Center (ECRMC), Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs and Pioneers Memorial Hospital in nearby Brawley.

"This was not a Border Patrol pursuit, this is not associated with other agencies".

Both men and women aged 16 to 55 were in the SUV. One of those patients was the truck driver, who appeared to be alone in the vehicle.

Three patients were flown to other hospitals from the scene of the crash, and seven more were brought to El Centro.

"Some people were ejected onto the pavement, onto the ground, and passed away", he said.

At least 18 people have been killed after a road crash in California. The rig's front end was pushed into the SUV's left side and two empty trailers were jackknifed behind it. "That vehicle is not meant for that many people". If it had 25 people inside, that would easily exceed the payload limit, which taxes the brakes and makes it tougher to steer, said Frank Borris, former head of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's Office of Defects Investigation.

They suggested people pay tribute to him by donating to his foundation or to charities who would plant trees in his name . Speaking during the service Sir Tom's daughter Lucy Teixeira said: "Daddy, you would always tell us best foot forward".

Accounts on the number of passengers in the SUV and the number of fatalities vary.

Imperial County emergency crews were called out to the accident scene near Holtville before 7 a.m. PT. Holtville is a farming community about ten miles north of the border with Mexico, growing mostly alfalfa and vegetables. "My thanks to the Imperial County Fire Department and other first responders for their swift response and the various medical centers in the area that treated injured passengers".

Macario Mora, a spokesman for Customs and Border Protection, said Border Patrol was helping other law enforcement with the crash.

Edward said in an interview that he believed the victims were undocumented immigrants who may have crossed the border recently.

Authorities are working with the Mexican consulate to identify the victims.

Those killed ranged in age from 20 to 55, but at least one of the injured was a minor age 16.

Watson also said that "there were children in the vehicle but we don't have all the ages yet", later specifying that they were "not young children".

The crash occurred during the height of harvest in California's Imperial Valley, which provides much of the lettuce, onions, broccoli and winter vegetables to USA supermarkets.
