Dialogue, win-win are right choices for China-US relations

The report followed the first face-to-face diplomatic meetings between officials from the USA and China since the start of Joe Biden's presidency.

They will talk again later Friday for the final meeting in Anchorage, Alaska.

Blinken said the USA would bring up its "deep concerns" about issues related to the government's repression of Uyghurs in Xinjiang, as well as anti-democracy efforts in "Hong Kong, Taiwan, cyber attacks on the United States [and] economic coercion of our allies" during the first official talks of the Biden administration. After the meeting in Alaska, Mr Blinken said that "on Iran, on North Korea, on Afghanistan, on climate, our interests intersect".

The United States accused China of "grandstanding" for its domestic audience, and both sides suggested the other had broken diplomatic protocol. Before sitting down, the two sides illustrated the poor health of their relationship by trading barbs in front of journalists.

Biden administration officials have also expressed openness to relax some visa restrictions on Chinese nationals put in place under Trump, but not his tariffs and sanctions as demanded by China.

Afterwards, the U.S. delegation accused China of violating the agreed protocol of two minutes of opening remarks by each side.

China on Friday put a Canadian citizen on trial on spying charges and is set for another Canadian's trial on Monday, cases embroiled in a wider diplomatic spat between Washington and Beijing. Meanwhile, Beijing is intent on signaling that it is not intimidated by the United States or swayed by American claims to global leadership.
