Tornado brings injuries, destruction to Alabama

"We can confirm local residential structures have been completely destroyed", Shelby County Sheriff John Samaniego told The Associated Press. "Our hearts, our thoughts and our prayers go to the families, and we are going to do our best to let them know we love them".

Counties in the Mid-South through the Tennessee Valley and some parts of Georgia are also facing tornado warnings.

The National Weather Service warned that a large severe-weather cell would continue battering Alabama and small portions of neighbouring states with high-velocity winds, hail and tornadoes.

A tornado warning has since been lifted, but forecasters said they were still possible into the evening across all of northern Alabama and southern middle Tennessee.

The storms, which spread Thursday afternoon from MS to Georgia and up to Tennessee, were headed northeast, according to forecasters.

The bad weather hitting the Southeast caused First Lady Jill Biden to cancel a visit to Alabama she had planned for Friday.

Multiple rounds of rain, storms this week
After a quiet weekend, we've got plenty of chances for rain and storms in the forecast for first week of spring. Those scattered showers will move east of the Heartland overnight and set us up for a dry day on Wednesday .

Authorities remain unsure of the extent of damage in Alabama, as the severe weather is continuing on Thursday afternoon, inhibiting search and research efforts. We've got homes along here that are totally destroyed, trees down, power lines down.

As many as eight tornadoes might have touched down in Alabama on Thursday, De Block said.

Thursday's severe weather came after 25 tornadoes struck Alabama last week. "Y'all, please stay safe and vigilant!"

Earlier, Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey issued an emergency declaration for 46 counties, and officials opened shelters in and around Birmingham.
