The Saskatchewan government reported that the primary use of the AstraZeneca vaccine in the province was at the drive thru clinic in Regina where more than 15,000 doses were available to residents 58 years of age and older.

Morrison said millions of people around the world have received the AstraZeneca vaccine without any reported issues, including more than 300,000 doses in Canada.

"For those Islanders who have been vaccinated to date using AstraZeneca, 1,680 of them, I understand this news would be a little bit disturbing [to hear] but I do want to reiterate.that the risk of developing a serious problem after being immunized is very, very low", P.E.I. premier Dennis King said at a press conference on Monday.

The province has jabbed more than 14,000 of the 18,000 initial AstraZeneca doses they have received so far.

"So, again this is a very rare outcome".

The AstraZeneca shot, which has been authorized in more than 70 countries, is a pillar of a United Nations -backed project known as COVAX that aims to get COVID-19 vaccines to poorer countries. Representatives from regional health authorities will contact affected individuals directly.

The vaccine is used widely in Britain, across the European continent and in other countries, but its rollout was troubled by inconsistent study reports about its effectiveness, and then more recently the scare about clots that had some countries temporarily pausing inoculations. Those symptoms mimic those of a stroke or a heart attack.

Anyone who has received a vaccine, just like anyone who takes medication, should monitor their health for side effects, Hinshaw said.

The observed fatality rate of VIPIT cases is about 40 per cent, but Dr. Deeks said the likelihood of fatality may decrease with "increase awareness" of VIPIT and early treatment. She said the daily average for infections rose by ten percent over the past week, to almost 70,000 per day.

"At this time, we are pausing the use of AstraZeneca vaccine to adults under 55 years of age pending further risk-benefit analysis". Those with appointments who are under 55 will see those appointments cancelled.

The province launched its "Stick it to COVID" advertising campaign to encourage people to get a vaccine when it's their turn.

"While we still believe the benefits for all ages outweigh the risks I'm not comfortable with probably". Few of them went to younger people, according to local reports.

Reimer said that beginning on Friday, it became clear a number of challenges cropped up, leading to long lines, delays for injections and frustration for all involved.

The province is expecting well over 100,000 more doses of vaccine this week, public health's vaccine update said Monday.

In light of this evolving information, Health Canada will be issuing additional terms and conditions on the authorizations of the AstraZeneca and Verity Pharmaceuticals/Serum Institute of India vaccines.
