One person has died after slamming a vehicle into the security barrier surrounding the Capitol building, USA media report.

"I'm heartbroken for the officer killed today defending our Capitol and for his family". She says the suspect then exited the vehicle with a knife and lunged at the officers.

The suspect's name has not been released, but he died at a hospital. The officials could not discuss an ongoing investigation and spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity.

At the time Trump's supporters shouted slogans including "Stop the Steal" and "Hang Mike Pence" as they attacked the Capitol and said they hoped to stop the election certification.

US Capitol Police say an officer has died after a suspect rammed his auto into two officers and lunged at them with a knife before being shot in Washington today.

The slain officer was identified by US Capitol Police as William "Billy" Evans, an 18-year veteran of the force. There was also no immediate connection apparent between Friday's crash and the January 6 riot.

The crash and shooting happened at a security checkpoint near the Capitol typically used by senators and staff on weekdays, though most are away from the building during the current recess. A street sign visible on the right side of the picture indicates she was standing on Independence Avenue, which is on the south side of the Capitol building (opposite of where the April 2 incident occurred).

The Capitol complex has been on high alert since the January 6 attack by former President Donald Trump's supporters, which left five people dead.

Authorities do not believe that the attack was terrorism-related.

"Today, once again, these heroes risked their lives to protect our Capitol and our Country, with the same extraordinary selflessness and spirit of service seen on January 6".

Americans with 2 COVID vaccine doses can travel, CDC says
The new guidance comes as almost a third of the country's adult population has received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine. The CDC defines a person as "fully-vaccinated" two weeks after they've received their last dose.

In recent weeks, some security has been loosened, with the number of armed National Guard troops at the Capitol reduced and a security fence that created a broad perimeter around the Capitol complex removed. It is unclear if the shots were fired by law enforcement or suspects at this time.

Police responded by firing on the suspect, who died.

US Capitol Police said that one of the police officers had also died, while the other two officers are hospitalised.

But the attack underscores that the building and campus - and the officers charged with protecting them - remain potential targets for violence.

Two officers were struck by the vehicle and have been taken to hospital.

In the incident, a auto rammed a barricade outside the US Capitol on Friday afternoon (US time), killing one officer and injuring another.

"On behalf of the entire House, we are profoundly grateful".

Both Capitol Police officers and the driver were taken to the hospital, the officials said. Per journalists present at the site, Capitol Hill has been placed on lockdown due to an "external security threat".

Video posted online showed a dark-coloured sedan crashed against a vehicle barrier and a police K9 inspecting the vehicle. Law enforcement and paramedics could be seen caring for at least one unidentified individual.

President Joe Biden left Washington earlier in the day for Camp David, the presidential retreat in Maryland.
