During the press briefing, US Capitol Police acting Chief Yogananda Pittman said the suspect in the attack, who brandished a knife after ramming his vehicle into a police barricade on Constitution Avenue and was subsequently shot by officers, had also died.

The suspect, identified by authorities as 25-year-old Noah Green of IN, crashed a dark blue sedan into the two officers shortly after 1 they were standing guard at a barricade on the Senate side of the U.S. Capitol, where tensions are still high since the deadly January 6 insurrection, officials said.

The Congress is in recess and most lawmakers are away. It comes as the Washington region remains on edge almost three months after a mob of armed insurrectionists stormed the Capitol as Congress was voting to certify Joe Biden's presidential win.

The suspected died at about 1:30 on Friday afternoon, police said. "Officer Evans had been a member of the United States Capitol Police for 18 years".

Five people, including a Capitol Police officer, died in the assault inspired by Trump's groundless claims that he had lost the November presidential election due to massive fraud. It occurred about 100 yards (91 meters) from the entrance of the building on the Senate side of the Capitol.

Republicans have spent weeks pressuring House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to remove protective fencing erected in the aftermath of the attack.

The suspect had been taken to the hospital in critical condition.

Five people died in the January 6 riot, including Capitol Police officer Brian Sicknick, who was among a badly outnumbered force trying to fight off the intruders seeking to overturn the election.

A Sputnik correspondent at the scene witnessed and took photos of National Guard troops positioned around the perimeter, some carrying riot shields and other protective equipment.

Video posted online showed a dark-coloured sedan crashed against a vehicle barrier and a police dog inspecting the vehicle.
