A auto appeared to ram into a barricaded checkpoint outside the US Capitol on Friday, wounding two Capitol Police officers and leading to the driver being shot, law enforcement officials told the Associated Press.

The attack came amid tightened security in Washington after the January 6 insurrection by supporters of then-president Donald Trump. A suspect was taken into custody, and the two officers were taken to the hospital to be treated for their injuries, police said.

But Congress is now in recess, meaning the majority of politicians are not at the Capitol complex today.

No information was available on the identity of the attacker or his motivation, but Washington Metropolitan Police Chief Robert Contee indicated that a terror link was not suspected at this stage.

The security checkpoint is typically used by senators and staff on weekdays.

The officials initially said the suspect was being taken to the hospital in critical condition.

The US Capitol complex was placed on lockdown after the shooting and staff were told they could not enter or exit buildings.

According to U.S. Capitol Police, a person rammed a vehicle into two Capitol Police officers.

In recent weeks some security has been loosened, with the number of armed National Guard troops at the Capitol reduced and a security fence that created a broad perimeter around the Capitol complex removed.

"Please join me in prayer for the two Capitol Police officers and their families", McCarthy tweeted.

Tensions in Washington have remained high in the wake of the deadly January 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol by supporters of former President Donald Trump.

Shortly after 13:00 local time (18:00 GMT) the Capitol Police alert system sent an email to lawmakers and their staff ordering them to stay away from exterior windows and doors due to a threat.

"If you are outside, seek cover", the messages said.

President Joe Biden had just departed the White House for Camp David when the attack occurred.
